Sunset sale, the hit Netflix reality show about high-priced real estate in Los Angeles has welcomed two new cast members for season four, Mexican novela actress turned real estate agent Vanessa Villela and food entrepreneur. Emma Hernan.
âJust kidding that the Oppenheim group is: Game of Homes,â the latter says while working for the Los Angeles real estate agency that is the focus of the series. Co-founded by twins Jason and Brett Oppenheim, the company is also largely populated by a group of women whose interpersonal drama is a key ingredient to the success of the Netflix show, in addition to being able to visit its parade of modernist homes. multi-million dollar squares.
But Hernan says that despite the competitiveness and conflict captured onscreen – including a storyline involving a joint ex pitting her against fellow agent Christine Quinn – behind the cameras, âit’s been really fun. I love working with Jason and Brett and all the girls. We go out in groups all the time and have so much fun together which is nice when you are actually working with your best friends.
But while Hernan is new Sunset sale, it is not new to the Oppenheim group. She joined real estate brokerage in 2017 after meeting Jason Oppenheim at the Catch restaurant in West Hollywood.
âI was looking for my first home and we hit it off,â says Hernan, over coffee at the West Hollywood Conservatory. âSomeone recommended to me, ‘You have to use Jason. He is the best broker in LA. So I met him. We exchanged information and he helped me find my first property that I bought, actually right next to his house, literally across the street.
It was Jason who suggested that Hernan become a real estate agent. âBecause we went to the houses and I picked up everything very quickly. He told me ‘you have to get your license,’ âsays Hernan, who earlier this year, along with Jason, sold a house owned by electronic music star Alesso for $ 6.35 million.
The agent and former model – who grew up in the Boston area and is also an investor and entrepreneur (who founded his own vegan food business Emma Leigh & Co. – speak with Hollywood journalist on why she joined the show this season, why she thinks it became a success, and how she started investing money as a teenager.
Why didn’t you join the show before season four?
I was more focused on other things. I invest heavily in different startups and run meetings, and I was in Boston to start my food business. And then I got more involved in selling, buying, taking clients. So Jason said to me, ‘You have to come on the show.’
What is it like working with Jason and his girlfriend, Chrishell Stause?
I love seeing them together. They are so cute. They are really in love and really hardworking and it is nice to be with them.
Why do you think the show is such a success?
Sunset sale does so well because you touch a bit of everything. You hit real estate. You are in fashion. You touch a lot of different dynamics and relationships. People like to look at relationships as well as real estate. And then, of course, real estate is probably the best in the world. Seeing these houses in the hills is what people dream of. This season is, I think, the best it has ever been. We are adding a lot more girls. It’s definitely a bigger group of women in the office, so it’s always an interesting dynamic.
Where did you grow up
My whole family is in Boston. I grew up south of Boston, a small seaside town called Scituate. I have been in the food industry all of my life. My grandfather started a business – it was really small – he made crab cakes in his kitchen.
How did you come to invest?
I started very young. I took care of this family. I was a nanny and the father went to Harvard. When I put the kids to nap, instead of watching TV like most babysitters, I watched – saw her Christmas bonus. It was a really big Christmas bonus.
So did that inspire you?
My father was a firefighter. My mom was a stay-at-home mom. My parents didn’t know anything about stocks. And so I took all my babysitting money, all my modeling money and started investing it in health, in stocks. Please note, I am only 14 years old. When I started doing this, I saved every penny. And then when my grandfather died, in order to bring the business to where it is today, I loaned my family money to have equipment, for payroll. I’m 16 and I lend my family hundreds of thousands of dollars to have this business [Yankee Trader Seafood] go and grow it where it is today. It is now a multi-million dollar business.
How did you get interested in real estate?
Once you start making a lot of money and stuff like that, you move on to real estate. I feel like it’s natural. Real estate is one of the best investments you can make.
Among the food products that your business sells are vegan empanadas. Where can people find them?
I just heard from Costco that they’re taking it, which is huge. I have already been to QVC with some of my articles. They’re on all the major retailers on the east coast. Honestly, being a female entrepreneur is really important to me. Believe me, I’ve been to meetings where people literally laugh.
Why?
Because people get a feel for what you look like and think you’re in the wrong place. I had to prove myself more than most because you can be judged by how you look. So I’ve always wanted to work so hard and give back to my family, and that’s what motivates me. I want a young girl to watch the show and say, “Wow, I have a passion.” And maybe they can go out there and start a business. I want to inspire people and that’s why I continued [the show] and – cliché as it sounds – it’s true. So if I can change someone’s life there, I want to be able to do it.
