Gatineau’s famous musty mansion is back on the market

When you finally move into your dream home, what pleasant smell will greet you as you cross the threshold? Freshly baked chocolate chip cookies, a sweet floral candle, the zesty notes of a lemon-scented cleanser? If you live in that $300,000 house in Gatineau, it will be the delicious earthy rot of mold!

The exterior may be deceptively ordinary but the interior of this house is nothing to sneeze at – or maybe that’s all you’ll do, unless you bring a filter mask, like the agent real estate Souleymane Haydara.

Haydara visited the home in a viral TikTok series, exploring the truly staggering amount of water and mold damage that characterizes the home.

The house is full of abandoned possessions, including, unfortunately, a refrigerator full of expired food. “It really looks like someone was here one day and gone the next,” Haydara remarks in her viral TikTok tour of the house.

Previously on the market at the same price, this wet house features four bedrooms, one bath and one powder room, and a one-car garage.

The property had already received an offer of $308,000 and was set to be sold, but its original owner returned and wanted to repossess the house, Haydara told Narcity Quebec. Since he couldn’t produce the funds to pay, the bank put the house back on the market, he said.

Haydara speculates that the house might sell for less than the asking price — we might not see a repeat of that offer for $8,000 more. “For sure the bank will always keep a margin of flexibility,” he told Narcity, “So there’s always a play, but there’s a limit. I wouldn’t be surprised if he sell a little lower.”

Once you’ve made your way through the crumbling walls and spiky debris, there’s a lovely backyard to relax in. With the right renovator, this home may have a better life ahead of it.
